What’s Adornment?
Adornment: Vintage (Re)made Modern
Me
I’m Katy - I founded & run Adornment.
I strive to create modern affordable ethical jewellery that transcends trends by reusing sustainable vintage & pre-loved materials.
Adornment is about the sheer fabulousness of vintage jewellery. That’s how I feel about it, but for some people it can be a bit, well, weird. Or it doesn’t suit their style, seems dated or is a bit worse for wear.
So I recycle….rework….reimagine - all of these really - vintage jewellery & other ‘old’m shiny things into new sustainable, wearable treasures that transcend trends.
The backstory
It all started when I was 10 & my Grandma gave me a tiny pot of copper beads…they felt like treasure. I started making jewellery for family & friends. Soon I started finding really pretty necklaces in charity shops I’d visit with my mum, that contained much more interesting materials than I could buy in craft shops so I took them apart to reuse the beads and hardware.
This love of making grew & I focussed on jewellery on my Art Foundation course. From there I trained as a silversmith & whilst I didn’t pursue that as a career I have been making jewellery consistently, just for the sheer love of it, for 25 years.
Sustainability
Since those early days in charity shops & having been aware of sustainability issues since my teenage years, I’ve been drawn towards reusing & reworking the beautiful materials that are already out there in the world rather than buying new.
All the vintage jewellery & components I work with are carefully selected. I do have to use some new parts and occasionally mix in semiprecious stones I have accumulated over the years.
Adornment produces affordable ethical jewellery that is designed & handcrafted by me at my home studio. All packaging is plastic free, recycled and/or recyclable
